Power Station VR Training Simulation

Spring 2024

This was a semester-long project that I did at my Job at the ARIES Lab. For this project, we created a digital twin of a power station on campus for employee training purposes. We went to a power station on-campus and used a LIDAR scanner to create a point cloud of the power station. Then, we modeled and textured the power station so we could put it into a VR environment using Unreal Engine. Finally, we added flips and switches which worked the same way as the real power station so that new employees could use this simulation as a risk-free way to learn how to work there. Virginia Tech did a story about the project which is accessible here: https://news.vt.edu/articles/2025/04/eng-ece-digital-twins-virtual-reality-workforce-training.html

My Role in the Project:

In this project, I modeled and textured the outside of the power station using the point cloud generated by the scan of the power station. I also brought the models into Unreal Engine.

Collaborators:

Connor Cosimano - modeled the inside section of the power station and handled VR implementation of the project

Sophia Pomatto - created 3D scan of the power station and modeled the outside of the power station
